Quilt #4

Started May 2017. Finished June 2017.

I finished this quilt on June 1, 2020. It was made for my best friend’s first baby who was born on June 2. I still can’t believe how perfect that timing was. I decided to make a quilt as a gift because I was in a phase of quilt making. Having only made quilts from old t-shirts before, I was free to choose any pattern and fabric I wanted. I opted for a classic, gender neutral colour scheme of navy, grey, and yellow. I found an adorable yellow and grey elephant print and then found complementary fabrics in stripes and dots, deciding that navy was a perfect accent colour.

I wanted to pick a quilt pattern that used square patches but to challenge myself beyond a typical grid pattern, so I opted for a pattern that incorporated rows of half-sized squares too. I struggled to keep all of the seams lined up but overall, I am quite happy with this quilt. The backing fabric is an incredibly soft quilting cotton. I had to stitch two pieces together to make a wide enough backing and used this as an opportunity to add a bit of interest by adding a row of big and small squares. This quilt ended up being much larger than I had intended. I found that I had to adjust the number of rows and columns so that the width and length would be an appropriate size. The next time I start a brand new quilt, I will think a little bit more about the scale of the quilt patches in relation to the overall size of the quilt.
